The English Language Centre gives priority to teacher development. ELC-organized activities include:
Teacher Development Sessions, held weekly, at which ELC teachers share ideas and insights, sometimes with outside speakers
Teaching Development Day, usually held between Semester A and B, which focuses on a specific educational theme, such as testing or independent learning
Annual Retreat,
usually held in Semester B, at which future directions and departmental
teaching-related issues are discussed in a relaxing environment
ELC Colloquium on teacher-specified areas of interest, held on the first day of the academic year
Teacher Development Courses, organized from time to time in response to teachers’ needs
ELC staff also can also benefit from development opportunities offered by other CityU departments:
The departments of English, and Chinese, Translation and Linguistics organize language-related workshops and seminars
The Education Development Office offers teaching enhancement courses and workshops, advice
and support for the use of information technology in teaching, and individual consultations
for teaching staff
The Run Run Shaw Library offers talks and workshops to help staff find their way around the
library and improve their research skills
The Computing Services Centre organizes workshops and courses on basic programming, web
design, statistics packages and tools for presentations
