Who Takes What?

Bachelor’s degree students who do not qualify for exemption from ELC courses must take two core University English courses and three credits of University English electives.

Associate degree students in the Division of Building Science and Technology (BST), the School of Law (SLW) and the School of Creative Media (SCM) who do not qualify for exemption from ELC courses must take three ELC core courses.

BST and SLW associate degree students must also take three credits of University English electives. SCM associate degree students do not take any other ELC courses.

Community College students who do not qualify for exemption from ELC courses must take one ELC course.

Exceptions

Bachelor’s degree programmes in
English for Professional Communication
Linguistics and Language Technology
Translation and Interpretation

Associate degree programmes in
Bilingual Communication Studies

Students who do not meet the English attainment requirement on entry to the above programmes must pass the exams for required ELC courses but they do not have to take the courses. Simply passing an exam does not earn credit.

Other Courses

The ELC also provides Foundation English courses for mainland secondary school graduates in the University’s foundation year programme, and courses as requested for selected groups, including research postgraduate students.
