Who Takes What?

The table below specifies which students are required to take which courses in order to meet the University Language Requirement.


Entrants to Bachelor Degree Programmes

  1. The 6 credits will count towards the credit requirement for graduation and will be calculated in students’ GPA
  2. The 6 credits are treated as ‘additional credits’, and will NOT count towards the minimum credit requirement for graduation but will count towards the maximum credit units of 114 in the degree, and will not be calculated in students’ GPA

Senior year entrants to Bachelor Degree Programmes

  1. The 6 credits will count towards the credit requirement for graduation and will be calculated in students’ GPA
  2. The 3 credits will count towards the credit requirement for graduation and will be calculated in students’ GPA

Entrants to Associate Degree programmes (BST and SCM)

  1. The 6 credits will count towards the credit requirement for graduation and will be calculated in students’ GPA

 

Foundation year (Mainland) At the end of their Foundation Year programme, these students will take the ELC placement test to determine which English courses they need to take for their future degree study.
Entrants to nominated programmes without HKDSE/HKALE results Students will be invited to take the placement test to determine if they need to do EAP or GE
Entrants to non-nominated programmes without HKDSE/HKALE results Students will be invited to take the placement test to determine if they need to do EAP or other EN/CTL courses

Students who entered City University before August 2011

Bachelor degree students who do not qualify for exemption from ELC courses must take two core University English courses and three credits of University English electives.

Associate degree students in the Division of Building Science and Technology (BST) and the School of Creative Media (SCM) who do not qualify for exemption from ELC courses must take three ELC core courses.

BST associate degree students must also take three credits of University English electives. SCM associate degree students do not take any other ELC courses.
