Thousands of HKDSE takers, their parents, and teachers visited the College of Science’s (CSCI) booth for the latest admission tips during CityUHK UG Information Day, which was held successfully on 4 October 2025. For the first time, the College set up a photo booth utilising Artificial Intelligence technology for participants to capture their science moments: they could take home an AI face swap photo, choosing among 12 different scientist looks, inside a laboratory or with galaxy backgrounds!
First highlight of the day was the thematic talk about CSCI’s Flagship Programme “Global Research Enrichment and Technopreneurship (GREAT)”: “Science Talents for the GREAT Future”. Professor Andy Siu, Director of Flagship Programme, and Professor Sam Wong, Flagship Programme Coordinator, have invited Mr. Edmond Yau, the CEO of Koln 3D Technology (Medical) Limited, to share his mentorship experience and insights about applying innovation to the industry.
Issac Ho, a GREAT student and Mr. Yau’s mentee, shared his internship experience at Mr. Yau’s company. Issac also recapped his unforgettable moments of the half-year research internship working on condensed matter physics research at the University of Cambridge. Another GREAT student, Tasha Lam, who has finished her 6-month research internship working on researching the catalytic decomposition of plastics at the University of Oxford, was also a guest speaker.
Professor Siu introduced the admission requirements of GREAT in detail. He encouraged science lovers to join the GREAT programme and research on their interested topics.
There was another thematic talk titled “How Science Inspires GREAT Technopreneurs” in the afternoon. In this session, Professor Siu and Professor Wong have invited Mr. John Wong, the General Manager of SP Infinite Technology Limited and another mentor of GREAT students, to be a guest speaker. Kate Lee and Hazel Yao, 2 GREAT students, shared their learning experience at CSCI in this session. They encouraged the interested students to join the GREAT programme and seize the various opportunities the College offers.
The Department of Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics also hosted their own booths with Programme Leaders, Admission Tutors, current students, and alumni introducing their respective programmes. They also provided the latest information on the admission scores, JUPAS banding strategies, interview tips, career prospects and student life at the College of Science. Some participants stayed behind the admission talks and chatted with the Programme Leaders to know more about their interested UG programmes.
Not only did the participants take home our leaflets and tote bags, but many were fascinated with the eye-opening experience of CSCI’s popular laboratory demonstration. Professor Stephen Fu, Deputy Admissions Tutor from the Department of Chemistry, demonstrated “The Secret of Fluorescence” in the chemistry lab. Participants had a precious chance to mix the fluorescent agent and witness the liquid glowing in the dark.
On the other hand, in the Physics lab, Physics faculty members and students demonstrated magnetic levitation, 3D imaging, Generative AI in healthcare and education, and spin sensing of the magnetic field.
