Professor Jijian Xu, Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry under the College of Science, has been honoured with the “2025 Croucher Tak Wah Mak Innovation Award” in recognition of his critical research in batteries for green energy storage. Professor Xu will receive HK$5 million in research funding over five years.

Professor Xu’s work focuses on developing high-performance batteries for green energy storage that operate reliably between -40°C and 80°C. The project integrates anion-redox cathodes to enhance capacity through multi-electron conversions, leverages data-driven screening of electrolytes to optimise ion transport and extend the operation temperature range, and utilises metal anodes with artificial solid-electrolyte interphases to improve safety and durability.

By prioritising low-cost, abundant materials, the research ensures scalability and economic feasibility, effectively addressing the limitations of current lithium-ion batteries and advancing renewable energy storage with greener, faster and lower-cost batteries.

“I am truly excited and motivated,” said Professor Xu. “This is incredible recognition, which energises my team and me to keep pushing the boundaries of battery chemistry. We are designing next-generation batteries that are greener, safer, more affordable and reliable even in extreme conditions—from freezing cold to intense heat. We are exploring new chemical reactions to significantly boost battery energy—even in harsh climates.”

He added that the technology could support longer-range electric vehicles, enable large-scale energy storage, and contribute to long-term carbon neutrality.

The Croucher Tak Wah Mak Innovation Awards recognise the rising stars of Hong Kong science and enable them to focus on critical research within their fields.

Congratulations to Professor Xu!
