Eight outstanding scientists from the College of Science (CSCI), City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) have been awarded funding from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) for 2024, comprising one-fourth of all CityUHK’s NSFC funding awardees. Another highlight is that Professor Zhedong Zhang from the Department of Physics, has received two funding for different projects.

The total amount of funding reaches RMB 6.75 million, which serves as a recognition of the distinguished research capabilities of our faculty members in their respective fields. Congratulations!

The CSCI awardees are:

Awardee Department / Laboratory Project Title Amount of funding (RMB)
“Excellent Young Scientists Fund”
Professor Junzhang Ma Physics Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy characterisation of quantum materials 2,000,000
Professor Zhedong Zhang Physics Quantum-light ultrafast spectroscopy for molecules 2,000,000
“General Programme”
Professor Zhedong Zhang Physics Theoretical study of relaxation dynamics of molecular polaritons using multidimensional spectroscopy 530,000
Professor Sunny Wang Xin Physics Theoretical studies on optimal control of silicon-based quantum devices 520,000
Professor Chun-kit Kwok Chemistry Development of novel RNA G-Quadruplex (rG4)- PROTAC chimeras for rG4 binding protein degradation and gene regulation 500,000
“Young Scientists Fund”
Professor Jijian Xu Chemistry Research on magnesium chloride-based cathode materials and magnesium storage mechanisms for high energy magnesium batteries 300,000
Professor Ge Zhang Physics Correlation between generalization error and statistical-physical entropy in neural networks 300,000
Professor Lina Zhao Mathematics Polygonal DG methods for fluid-structure interaction 300,000
Dr. Mengyang Liu State Key Laboratory of Marine Pollution Processes and mechanisms of ocean-current regulation on the fate of PAHs in the upper Western Pacific Ocean 300,000

The “Excellent Young Scientists Fund”, open to researchers from Hong Kong and Macao since 2019, supports young scholars who have achieved notable results in basic research. Each awardee will receive a funding amount of RMB 2 million.

The “Young Scientists Fund” started accepting applications from Hong Kong scholars in 2022 and nurtures young scholars’ ability to undertake innovative projects independently. Each awardee will receive a funding amount of RMB 300,000.

“General Programme” supports scientists engaged in basic research on self-selected topics within the funding scope of NSFC to conduct innovative research and promote a balanced, coordinated and sustained development of all disciplines.

Congratulations to the above awardees for their well-earned recognition in breaking boundaries of knowledge through persistent research efforts. We wish them continued success in their research endeavours.
