The public forum on "Direct Election for LegCo in 2008", held at the Purple Zone of the University Concourse on 25 November, aroused a heated discussion on political development of Hong Kong. The forum was a highlight of the Hong Kong Week, 24-28 November, organized by a group of third-year Applied Social Studies students.
As Ms Caroline Hu Yee-man, a student in the School of Creative Media (SCM), rides through the city of Hong Kong on a ding ding (tram), memories and reflections are captured in her nine-minute experimental film, ReMembrance, which won her the Best Experimental Award in the 6th New York University International Student Film Festival (ISFF).
A new, fast-track, graduate-entry Juris Doctor (JD) programme and a restructured four-year Bachelor of Laws (LLB) programme for the 2004-05 academic year have been launched. These initiatives answer recommendations raised in a 2001 report on legal education reform in Hong Kong and cater to growing aspirations among non-law graduates to enter the legal profession.

Another year of arduous training has paid off for CityU athletes. In the 2002-03 Hong Kong Post-Secondary Colleges Athletic Association (HKPSCAA) competition, CityU teams displayed their prowess, clinching championship titles in women's basketball, squash and table-tennis, as well as men's badminton, basketball, soccer and squash. Respectively, the overall standing of CityU teams was first runner-up and champion.
"South Asian people have been living in our community for years. They hold valid identity cards. Some can even speak fluent Cantonese. But somehow, we seem to have ignored them; they seldom come into contact with us. Why?" Final year Social Work student, Keith Wun, has been inspired to think hard about the question while working as an active member of the Social Integration Project for Ethnic Minority People in Hong Kong.
Objective marketing analyses, creative minds and an eagerness to learn earned CityU's marketing students high praise for their consultancy projects. Projects were undertaken for five leading commercial firms, namely Sino Group, Ming Pao Magazine Ltd, TCL Retail (HK) Ltd, Dah Chong Hong Ltd and Hang Fung Gold Technology Group.
Last month, 22 outstanding foreign language students were awarded scholarships and sponsorships at ceremonies organized by CityU's Division of Language Studies (LS). At the French Awards Presentation Ceremony held on 16 May, 12 French programme students were recognized for their outstanding academic studies.
While most universities put a hold on their summer internship programmes because of SARS, CityU has secured 348 job training placements in 112 companies in Hong Kong and the Mainland this year. The placements, for year-two students from three faculties, represent a significant increase over last year's 240 placements in 64 companies. Standard Chartered Bank, Sogo Hong Kong Co. Ltd and Maunsell Consultants Asia Ltd are among the new companies involved in the programme.
A cool and calm figure in stylishly somber black, the curator of Third Text: images + media 03* in the School of Creative Media (SCM), Mr Ip Yuk-Yiu escapes from an office brimming with color. He guides me through the portal of the exhibit — I am about to enter a hi-tech zone, an esoteric womb of wonders that seem like science fiction. Here, in a disorienting cacophony of dramatic piano music, beeping, droning and announcements, Mr Ip takes me to the cutting edge.
