A first in Hong Kong: CityU students successfully pass the official Test de Connaissance du Francais
Some 17 students studying French courses in the French Section of City University's Division of Language Studies are the first students in Hong Kong to pass the Test de Connaissance du Francais (TCF) of the French Education Ministry, held on March 29, 2003.
Out-of-discipline (OD) courses are gaining more attention from faculties as a venue to fill educational needs currently not met in mainstream core curriculum. Rather than offering piecemeal OD courses, as in the past, some academic departments at City University have taken the proactive steps of consolidating resources on OD curriculum development, setting up committees and designating staff members to design tailored courses, and vigorously promoting OD courses to attract student enrolment.
An empirical study on energy consumption control of air-conditioning system in office environment won Mr Ryan Lee Lap-yan, a graduate of City University's Department of Building and Construction, the first prize of the 2002 Hays Montrose President's Prize from the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE).
Two City University students have a one-week study tour at the University of Washington to look forward to this summer, thanks to a winning business plan. A group of talented 21 students pledged to promote CityU's image and commit themselves to whole person development at the sixth Student Ambassador inaugural ceremony held on 23 January. The new batch of students ambassadors were selected out of 220 applicants because of their positive attitude, pleasant personality and strong communication skills.
City University's third annual WebCourse Fair 2003 kicked off on 14 January with a virtual exhibition showcasing the use of the Internet for teaching and learning. Around 30 teaching staff members shared online how they make use of audio-visual learning packages, online quizzes, self-assessment tools and 3D animations to stimulate students' interest.
Out-of-classroom learning experience has become increasingly important to university students these days as they prepare themselves for their careers in a competitive workplace. On recognizing this trend, the University has been active in building such experiences into the students' whole-person development experience. In December and January, 17 CityU students attended a three-week internship programme held in Chongqing, Sichuan, a municipality directly governed by the central government.
Fifteen groups of City University final-year marketing students were commended for their consultancy work at an Awards Presentation Ceremony held in the Wei Hing Theatre on 9 January.
