Naming ceremony of Yip Yuen Yuk Hing Hall

Student Residence Hall 8 at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) has been named Yip Yuen Yuk Hing Hall in appreciation of the support and generous donation of Dr and Mrs Yip Kit-chuen, Chairman of G.E.W. International Corporation Limited and Shanghai GMP Electrical Appliances Co. Ltd.

Dr Yip is a firm supporter of education development, and naming the hall after his wife, Ms Yuen Yuk-hing, is a token of Dr Yip’s unwavering commitment and love.

Guests attending the naming ceremony on 12 June included Dr and Mrs Yip, their family and friends; Mr Lester Garson Huang, CityU Council Chairman; Professor Way Kuo, President; Dr Peter Ho Ka-nam, CityU Council member; Professor Horace Ip Ho-shing, Vice-President (Student Affairs); Professor Matthew Lee Kwok-on, Vice-President (Development and External Relations); Mr Sunny Lee Wai-kwong, Vice-President (Administration); Professor Paul Lam Kwan-sing, Chief-of-Staff; and Ms Kathy Chan Yin-ling, Associate Vice-President (Development and Alumni Relations).

In his welcoming remarks, Mr Huang said Dr Yip strongly supported the development of technology and education as a means to contribute to the well-being of China, saying he had made substantial donations to causes that nurture youngsters. He said it was CityU’s honour to receive Dr Yip’s donation for the development of the University.

Dr Yip said it was a joint wish for him and his wife, and his family to make contributions to society and he hoped to offer his support to the development of education. Reflecting on CityU’s outstanding achievements in recent years, he said the concerted efforts of senior management, staff and students would help advance CityU even further.

Professor Kuo thanked Dr Yip and his family for their staunch support, acknowledging the role that Dr Yip’s son, Dr Daniel Yip Chung-yin, served at CityU as a member of the Court.

Yip Yuen Yuk Hing Hall is a 14-storey block with 416 single rooms for research and postgraduate students. The facilities include a gym, a computer room and a multi-function room. By engaging in various programmes and activities, students can enhance their interpersonal and leadership skills which will benefit their careers.
