Promoting sustainability on campus

Professor Rod Melnick from Arizona State University (ASU) discussed ASU’s efforts on establishing a pan-university commitment to sustainability in a University Lecture held at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) on 16 December.

Professor Melnick, Executive Dean of Global Institute of Sustainability (GIOS), and Presidential Professor of Practice, School of Sustainability, ASU, shared at the lecture his experience and inspiration about the design, development, implementation and aspirations of the GIOS, which is a practice of leading, supporting and coordinating ASU’s university-wide sustainability efforts in its academic endeavour, including research, education and external engagement with local and global communities. His presentation was followed by a lively exchange with CityU faculty and staff.

Guests at the lecture included Professor Arthur Ellis, Provost, Professor Gregory Raupp, Vice-President (Research and Technology), and Professor Julia Tao Lai Po-wah, Chief-of-Staff. The lecture is part of the initiative to strengthen strategic collaboration between CityU and ASU under an agreement signed in April 2011 to enhance ties between the two universities in urban sustainability, digital and creative media, flexible electronics for enabling human-scale and built environment technologies, and product innovation.
