City University of Hong Kong (CityU) is ranked 51st among the world’s top 100 universities (and 2nd in Hong Kong) in the field of engineering, technology and computer science, according to a survey of the academic ranking of world universities by broad subject fields recently released by Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

CityU ranks 3rd among the nine universities in the Greater China area (covering the mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau), and ranks 2nd among the three universities in Hong Kong that have broken into the top 100. The ranking once again confirms that CityU has attained international recognition as an outstanding university in the region.

“CityU excels in professional education and applied research. The Jiao Tong ranking gives a lot of weight to citations and publications. I am glad to see that our colleagues' hard work is being recognized," said Professor H K Chang, University President. "The excellent teaching programmes go hand in hand with, and often inspire, research work at CityU,” he said. “And the number of students who have won international awards in recent years attests to this linkage.”

The ranking is another boost for the University. In the 2006 World University Rankings conducted by the Times Higher Education Supplement, CityU jumped five places to 85th in the world’s top technology universities. In October 2006, the Times Higher Education Supplement ranked CityU at 154th among the world’s top prestigious universities, a surge of 24 places from 178th a year earlier.

Since 2003, Shanghai Jiao Tong University has conducted the academic ranking of world universities annually by looking at the overall academic performance of institutions. The recent study is the first time Shanghai Jiao Tong has studied the academic ranking of universities by broad subject fields.

The study rates universities according to their academic or research performance in the five broad subject fields: Natural Sciences and Mathematics; Engineering/Technology and Computer Science; Life and Agriculture Sciences; Clinical Medicine and Pharmacy; and Social Sciences.

The ranking indicators include alumni and staff who win Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, highly-cited researchers, articles indexed in Science Citation Index-Expanded and Social Science Citation Index, the percentage of articles published in the top 20% journals of each field, and engineering research expenditure.
