Dr. Jason Lam, Assistant Professor, was interviewed by TVB Pearl (Pearl Magazine) to share his view on the wood waste and e-waste problems faced in Hong Kong. The interview was broadcast on Channel 84 TVB Pearl on 21st November 2021.

Dr. An’s PhD Student Mr. Bowen Pak Wai Wong received the 1st Student Best Poster Presentation Award by Desalination Editors at the Membrane Desalination 2021 (MEMDES2021), 5th International Conference on Desalination using Membrane Technology, which was held during 14 - 17 November 2021. Mr. Wang presented his PhD study on “Real-time monitoring of membrane wetting progression using impedance spectroscopy”. The paper is now under revision by EST.

Under the supervision from Dr. Denis Yu, a cross-disciplinary team comprising undergraduates from Department of Economics and Finance, and Department of Mechanical Engineering, recently won the HK Tech 300 seed fund for the project regarding development of low-cost rechargeable Zn-MnO2 batteries.

Close to 50 SEE undergraduates, postgraduates, research staff and faculty members formed into a group to join the Eco Expo Asia 2021 on 27 October 2021 at the Hong Kong Exhibitions & Conventions Centre. The group took part in the green building guided tour and learnt a lot more on the latest technologies.

Green hydrogen production from solar water splitting has attracted a great deal of interest in recent years because hydrogen is a fuel of high energy density. A research team led by Dr. Yun Hau Ng, Associate Professor, discovered the quantum confinement effect in a photocatalyst of a 3D-ordered macroporous structure. The quantum confinement effect was found to enable hydrogen production under visible light. The findings offer an option for addressing energy and environmental challenges.

Dr. Jason Lam, Assistant Professor of the School of Energy and Environment, was recently invited by The Hong Kong Association of Energy Service Companies Limited (HAESCO) to deliver an online seminar on one of Hong Kong’s most underexplored renewable resources, lignocellulosic biomass. Dr. Lam discussed how lignocellulosic biomass could mitigate Hong Kong’s petroleum needs and facilitate the social transition into a sustainable future. The talk attracted a wide range of audiences from renewable chemical industries and government sector.

Congratulations! Led by Dr. Jiaxin Guo, SEE Postdoctoral Fellow, the project “A Novel Reusable Antivirus Non-Toxic Visible-light Driven Photocatalytic ZIF-8 Loaded Fabric for Air Cleaning” is awarded the HK Tech 300 seed fund. HK Tech 300 is a large-scale flagship innovation and entrepreneurship programme organised by CityU for aspiring entrepreneurs among CityU students, alumni, research staff and others to launch start-ups and ignite their entrepreneurship journey.

In a recent Colloquium, Dr. Thomas Tang, CEO & Founder of PJ Sustainability Consulting, shared his insights on the environmental and social issues with the audience. He also explained how Environmental Social Governance (ESG) becomes a trend and solution to many of these issues. Through the sharing, audience were able to understand the trends and opportunities in ESG.
