The Clarivate’s highly cited researchers list recognises scientists who have demonstrated substantial influence in their fields by publishing multiple highly cited papers ranked in the top 1% by citations. This year, 6,868 scholars from 60 countries and regions were named Highly Cited Researchers 2025, with Hong Kong ranking eighth globally
Among them, Professor David Xiongwen Lou, Chair Professor of Materials Chemistry from the Department of Chemistry, is one of 31 researchers in the world awarded in three or more categories. Professor Hua Zhang, Herman Hu Chair Professor of Nanomaterials, and Professor Qichun Zhang, Professor and Joint Faculty member from the Department of Chemistry, are among the 227 researchers in the world awarded in two categories.

This latest report was prepared by a team of experts led by Professor John Ioannidis of Stanford University, based on the August 1, 2025 snapshot from the Scopus database and is updated to the end of citation year 2024. The publicly available database provides information on the work of the world’s top-cited scientists including standardised information on citations, h-index, co-authorship-adjusted hm-index, citations to papers in different authorship positions, and a composite indicator (c-score).
Scientists are classified into 22 scientific fields and 174 sub-fields. The selection is based on the top 100,000 scientists by c-score (with and without self-citations) or a percentile rank of 2% or above in the sub-field.
