27 academic subjects at CityUHK have been ranked in the global top 100 in the ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) 2025, with 12 subjects topping the rankings in Hong Kong, including Nanoscience & Nanotechnology, Materials Science & Engineering, Chemistry, and Chemical Engineering.
The GRAS was first published by ShanghaiRanking in 2017. It includes rankings for universities in 57 subjects across the Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences and Social Sciences. The rankings utilise a range of objective academic indicators under five evaluation categories to measure the performance of world universities in their respective subjects, including World-Class Faculty, World-Class Output, High-Quality Research, Research Impact and International Collaboration. This year, the rankings encompassed over 3,000 universities worldwide, with approximately 2,000 universities from around 92 countries and regions appearing on the lists across various disciplines.
Satisfactory subject rankings were also achieved in the U.S. News & World Report Best Global Universities Rankings, and the Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities (NTU Rankings). Below is a summary of subject rankings related to the College of Science (CSCI):
