Programme Aims and Objectives

The MSc in Business and Data Analytics (MScBDA) programme aims to cultivate students with professional knowledge of business data analytics through active learning of the theories, methods, supporting techniques across a wide range of knowledge areas such as applied statistics, big data management, data mining and social media analytics.  The MScBDA programme has three streams. Normally, a student will be admitted to either the Information Systems Management (ISM) or the Quantitative Analysis for Business (QAB) streams. Under exceptional circumstances, a student may be considered for admission to the General (G) stream.

Entrance Requirements

Applicants must:

  • hold a recognized Bachelor’s degree in any disciplines with the curricula covering appropriate mathematical knowledge.

Selection will be based on the candidate’s academic performance in previous studies, relevant working experience (if any), motivation and potential of the candidate and performance in the interview.

Applicants whose entrance qualification is obtained from an institution where the medium of instruction is not English should also fulfill the following minimum English proficiency requirement:

  • TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based test) or 59 (revised paper-delivered test) or 79 (internet-based test); or
  • Overall band score of 6.5 in International English Language Testing System (IELTS); or
  • Score 450 in the new College English Test (CET6) of Chinese mainland; or
  • Other equivalent qualifications

Quantitative Analysis for Business Stream Electives

  • Predictive Modeling and Forecasting for Business
  • Predictive Modeling in Marketing

The remaining elective may be a postgraduate course offered by any department in the College of Business.

General Stream Electives

Any four postgraduate elective courses offered by the College of Business. 

Bonus Features

Use of statistical software to conduct data analysis is an integral part of the programme. Students will have access to the latest SAS statistical software including the Enterprise Miner (EM) used as a primary data mining tool by many business organizations in Hong Kong and elsewhere.

This programme, jointly offered by the Department of Management Sciences and Department of Information Systems, is housed and coordinated by the College of business.
† Combined mode: Local students taking programmes in combined mode can attend full-time (12-18 credit units per semester) or part-time (no more than 11 credit units per semester) study in different semesters without seeking approval from the University. For non-local students, they will be admitted to these programmes for either full-time or part-time studies. Non-local students must maintain the required credit load for their full-time or part-time studies and any changes will require approval from the University.
