Outline
Programme Aims and Objectives

Train Professionals for the media, other industries and institutions, including:

  • Mass media
  • Advertising/PR agencies
  • PR/marketing communication departments of commercial firms
  • Information/publicity departments of governmental or non-profit organizations
  • Content divisions of Web/multimedia houses
  • Mobile media and other communication-related sectors
  • Marketing/media/consumer data analysis
Entrance Requirements

To be eligible for admission, you must satisfy the General Entrance Requirements and:

  • have a Bachelor's degree from a recognized tertiary institution or an equivalent qualification in a related field before joining this programme;

  • preferably have at least one year of professional experience in a communication area (e.g., new media, television, broadcasting, newspaper, advertising, public relations, etc.)

Applicants whose entrance qualification is obtained from an institution where the medium of instruction is not English should also fulfill the following minimum English proficiency requirement:

  • a score of 79 (Internet-based test) in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)@#; or
  • an overall band score of 6.5 in International English Language Testing System (IELTS)@; or
  • a score 450 in the new College English Test (CET-6) of Chinese mainland; or
  • other equivalent qualifications.

@TOEFL and IELTS scores are considered valid for two years. Applicants are required to provide their English test results obtained within the two years preceding the commencement of the University's application period. 

#Applicants are required to arrange with the Educational Testing Service (ETS) to send their TOEFL results directly to the University. The TOEFL institution code for CityUHK is 3401.

 

Course Description

​​​​​​A. Programme Core Courses for All Streams (12 credits)

  • Research Methods for Communication and New Media
  • Internet Communication
  • Capstone Project

B. Stream Compulsory Courses (9 credits)

Students can specialize in one of the two streams (Media Data Analytics and Digital Media) by completing the required courses prescribed by the stream. The offer of a stream is contingent on the availability of teaching staff and the minimum number of students pre-selecting the stream. In case a stream cannot be offered for an academic year, the Digital Media Stream will be the default stream.

C. Stream Electives (9 credits)

 

Bonus Features
  • Training in English language skills, as all courses are taught in English with an emphasis on writing and oral presentations

  • Intercultural experience, as students come from Hong Kong, mainland China, Macau, Taiwan, Singapore, and other regions, and teaching staff have extensive working experience overseas.

  • The programme was established in 1998. Graduates from the programme are now working and living in Hong Kong, mainland China, North America, Europe, and other parts of the world. They have formed an alumni association to organize social activities and networking. 

  • Students of the programme won awards three years in a row at the Inter-University Multimedia Design Competitions, in which students from universities in Hong Kong, mainland China, Taiwan, Macau, Singapore and elsewhere participated. 

† Combined mode: Local students taking programmes in combined mode can attend full-time (12-18 credit units per semester) or part-time (no more than 11 credit units per semester) study in different semesters without seeking approval from the University. For non-local students, they will be admitted to these programmes for either full-time or part-time studies. Non-local students must maintain the required credit load for their full-time or part-time studies and any changes will require approval from the University.
