Swire Coca-Cola Hong Kong Ltd recently made a HK$100,000 donation to CityU's Smart Asset Management (SAM) Laboratory, in support of its unique equipment fault diagnosis and prognosis system—Smart Asset Maintenance System.
Rarely has a cultural festival exuded so much energy and zest in its opening ceremony. On 29 March, the "Hanbok Exhibition" opened in CityU's Run Run Shaw Library not only with a static display of the exquisite Korean national costume, but also a dynamic and potent demonstration of the traditional Korean martial art, Tae Kwon Do. Students and staff were given a sample of the Korean culture, from two different sides.
Four students taking elective French courses at City University's Division of Language Studies gained valuable experience and self-confidence by participating in the first ever French speech-writing contest organized by the Consulate-General of France in Hong Kong.
The Run Run Shaw Library has received a generous donation of Japanese hanga (woodprints) from Mr Denkichi Omi ( §À ¨ É´ ¦N ). An exhibition is now being held on Mr Omi's selected works in the Library Lobby.
Ms Amina Mohamed, Ambassador of Kenya and Permanent Representative to the United Nations and the World Trade Organization (WTO), Geneva, visited CityU's WTO Law and Dispute Resolution Centre on 24 March, to meet with SLW (Chair) Professor Peter Malanczuk. SLW Lecturer Dr Zhao Yun and several LLM students were also present.
In the first ever Willem C. Vis (East) International Commercial Arbitration Moot, hosted by CityU's School of Law (SLW) 18-21 March, Tsinghua University (Beijing) triumphed over the other 13 participating teams from universities around the world. "Thanks to all of you who helped start a tradition that will provide a continuing and ready reference to City University as the arbitration school of the region," concluded Vis (East) Director Ms Louise Barrington.
On the morning of 17 March, Professor H K Chang, President, extended a gracious welcome to a delegation of special guests from the Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of China in the Hong Kong Special Administration Region led by Commissioner Mr Yang Wenchang; other members include Ms Jiang Qin, Director-General (Department of International Organizations and Conferences); and Mr Tian Qi, Deputy Director of the Office of MFA.
Dear Colleagues, At the end of my letter to you on 23 February on the funding scenarios for the higher education sector in 2005-08, I pledged: "Together with my senior colleagues, I'll strive to manage the process of budget reduction with priority on upholding the quality of the education we offer and maintaining the stability of our staff." I recently met with the newly elected officers of the Staff Association and reiterated to them our dual priorities.
A delegation from the Education and Manpower Bureau (EMB), HKSAR, explained the to-be-implemented "3 + 3" structure in secondary education to some 40 CityU staff members, on March 13, in a meeting organized by the University's Education Development Office (EDO). China, as a new member of the World Trade Organization, has, by and large, complied with its membership duties, according to Mr Pascal Lamy, European Union Commissioner for Trade, who spoke at City University of Hong Kong on 12 March. But there seems to be a tendency on China's part to resort to "innovative" non-tariff trade practices that may not be in sync with the WTO principles.
