Lending a helping hand to typhoon victims in Taiwan

Michelle Leung

The devastating Typhoon Morakot struck Taiwan last week and caused tremendous destruction to the island. Intense rain and sturdy winds triggered the worst floods in 50 years and caused widespread mudslides that already took away more than a hundred lives, with tens of thousands still trapped in mountain villages waiting for rescue and support.

The City University of Hong Kong (CityU) community would like to express our grief and deepest sympathies for the deceased and injured, and wish to show our concern for the victims, including those displaced or still unaccounted for.

To support the affected people for emergency relief and rehabilitation, the University appeals to its staff, students and alumni to make donations through direct bank-in to CityU’s bank account at Hang Seng Bank (account number: 024-293-1-187708) by 15 September 2009. The funds will be passed to Chung Hwa Travel Service, the official Taiwan representative office in Hong Kong, to help the victims rebuild their homes.
