Sharing Our Love for Wellness

Karen Lai

The month of March offers us an opportunity to think about what love is and to express caring for the needy as well as our loved ones, whether near or far. “Sharing Our Love for Wellness”, the theme of this year's Wellness March, carries a strong message that love reaches beyond boundaries.

Wellness March is City University of Hong Kong’s annual event to promote the philosophy of Whole Person Development. The two words “wellness” and “march” together, express the strong impulse to stride ahead with vigour for a meaningful life. Organised by the Student Development Services, the event offers a wide range of talks, workshops and physical fitness activities for staff and students. The December 2004 tsunami victims are among the groups about whom CityU students have expressed concern, and so, a “Hand to Man, All for Love” talk was held on 2 March, during which officers from The Salvation Army Hong Kong & Macau Command introduced their rehabilitation services for the tsunami victims.

The Wellness March also reminds us to express love to people we encounter every day. CityU’s staff and students can express heartfelt goodwill to each other at the “Hearts-to-Hearts Express” event, to be held 10-17 March and the Students’ Union will visit mentally handicapped people at the Wai Ji Christian Service Long Ping Hostel on 19 March. On 23 March, Mr Cheung Wah, a newspaper columnist specializing in studies on China, will give a talk on the social development of Hong Kong and the mainland.

During this month, staff and students can join in a wide range of cultural and sports activities ---- all students, staff/staff dependents can enjoy the sports facilities at CityU and the Joint Sports Centre, free of charge. There is also a wide array of therapies available: yoga, pilates, dance movement, brain gym and fitness combat. To shape up your mental fitness, counsellors of the Student Development Services will speak on how to cope with exam stress and other psychological problems. A Healthy Eating Campaign and book exhibitions will be organised on campus.

Despite the hustle and bustle of life, we should spare time to strengthen our bodies and minds for a successful academic year! Moreover, students participating in Wellness March programmes can earn points in the Whole Person Development Award Scheme. Act fast to join the Wellness March.
