Discovering East Asian Culture by Indexing Korean Classics –Indexing Project Database Launching Ceremony (Updated)

The study of the history and culture of Korea and China has received a significant boost with the completion of a major database by City University of Hong Kong (CityU), Jeju National University, and the East Asian Library of the University of California, Berkeley.

Researchers have indexed the Han’guk yŏktae munjip ch‘ongsŏ (Korean Anthology in History), a collection of 3,000 volumes written in literary Chinese by influential authors from Korea. The works, each one an anthology of several writers, have been transcribed into the Korean alphabet and romanised using the McCune–Reischauer system. This is the first time that this collection has been indexed and transcribed into an online database.

The collection covers philosophy, history, literature, politics, society, economics, the military, geography and astronomy from the 7th century to the early 20th century.
