Dr Yeung Kin-man, President of Biel Crystal Holdings Limited, built his business empire from scratch and became a dominant player in the global smart device industry, thanks to his drive to innovate and adapt to change. Today, as Honorary Chairperson of the CityUHK Foundation’s Board of Governors, Dr Yeung sees his own values reflected in CityUHK’s forward-thinking vision.
Upon entering the meeting room of Professor Herman Hu Shao-ming, Co-Chairperson of the Board of Governors of CityUHK Foundation and Chairman of Ryoden Development Limited, one is greeted by memorabilia from different organisations. However, CityUHK items dominate the collection. “I joined the CityUHK Council in 2003 and served as its Chairman from 2012 to 2017,” he says, “so naturally, my connection with CityUHK is particularly deep.”
One notable similarity between Mr Lau Ming-wai, Chairman of Chinese Estates Holdings Limited, and CityUHK is that both made their mark early on. “Despite its youth, CityUHK has steadily risen in the global university rankings because it has a forward-looking vision and can seize opportunities,” said Mr Lau.
The Joseph Lau Luen Hung Charitable Trust (the Trust) has been offering unwavering support to CityU since 2011 by providing full-time undergraduates with opportunities to participate in outbound exchange programmes, non-local internships, and other life-changing experiences.

When CityUHK launched the Jockey Club Enhancing Youth Empathy Project through Immersive Visualisation (the Project) in 2017, Year 2 students Ng King-kwan and Michael Tam Ming-hong in the School of Creative Media (SCM) were attracted by the concept of "empathy", which was rarely featured in the rating scheme of any competitive games or projects they had previously entered.
Keen to create a vast range of useful unconventional materials from almost anything, one of CityUHK's top chemists and nanotechnology scientists is happy for others to apply them usefully for the advancement of humankind.
