CityUHK honours Honorary Fellow and Distinguished Alumnus Mr David Hui for two decades of unwavering support
Co-hosted by the Development Office and the Student Development Services, an appreciation ceremony at the Winling Practice Gymnasium in the Hu Fa Kuang Sports Centre at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) was held on 12 September to express our heartfelt gratitude to Mr David Hui Yip-wing for his long-term contributions to the University.
The event was officiated by Mr David Hui, Ms Phyllis Hui, daughter of Mr Hui, together with Ms Kathy Chan Yin-ling, Associate Vice-President (Development) and Secretary-General of CityUHK Foundation; Professor Alex Wong Chun-yuen, Dean of Students; Mr Denis Wan Chung-yin, Associate Director of Student Development Services (Physical Education); and brought together 90 distinguished guests, alumni, and student-athletes to honour Mr Hui’s staunch support. Following the ceremony, Mr Hui and his delegates presented the certificates to our student-athlete awardees of the Winling Basketball Scholarship Scheme 2025/26 for encouragement.
Mr Metta World Peace
One of the event highlights was the presence of Mr Metta World Peace, NBA champion and legend, for the inspiring sharing on “Mind Over Malice” and the “Elite Defensive Masterclass” with members of both the CityUHK and Winling Basketball Teams. The event concluded with an energetic friendly match between the two Teams.
Mr Hui, Honorary Fellow and distinguished alumnus of CityUHK as well as Honorary Vice-President of CityUHK Foundation, made his first donation to the University in 2003 and has become one of CityUHK’s most loyal alumni supporters. Deeply committed to nurturing young people and advancing sports development, he has devoted himself to creating opportunities that empower students to realise their potential, strive for excellence, and pursue their aspirations. Among all sports, basketball holds a special place in Mr Hui’s heart.
Over two decades, Mr Hui has established the Winling Basketball Team and Player Awards, the Winling Basketball Scholarships, and contributed to our Alumni Caring Fund, student development, and student bursaries. In recognition of Mr Hui’s contributions to the University, one of our practice gymnasiums in the Sports Complex was named the Winling Practice Gymnasium in 2005, the very first time in the University’s history that a campus facility was designated to our alumnus.
