Celebratory Gathering at CityUHK Marks Opening of the Michael Chan Table Tennis Room


A celebratory gathering was held on 27 August to mark the opening of the Michael Chan Table Tennis Room at the newly opened Hu Fa Kuang Sports Centre at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK).


Dr Michael Chan Wing-ming, a distinguished entrepreneur, musician and philanthropist who serves as an Honorary Vice-President of the CityUHK Foundation and a Member of its Board of Governors, has contributed generously to the University’s Endowment Campaign, student development, and strategic initiatives. His philanthropy has enriched our campus environment, empowering students to pursue excellence across academics, athletics, and personal growth.


The gathering was attended by Dr Chan, his family and guests, together with Professor Chan Chi-hou, Vice-President (Community Engagement); Professor Alex Wong Chun-yuen, Dean of Students; Ms Kathy Chan Yin-ling, Associate Vice-President (Development) and Secretary-General of CityUHK Foundation; Mr Perkins Ho Kui-lee, Director (Development Office) and Deputy Secretary-General of CityUHK Foundation; Professor Toh Kian-lam, Director of Student Development Services; CityUHK colleagues; and members of the CityUHK Table Tennis Team.

In Professor Chan’s welcome remarks, he expressed sincere gratitude to Dr Chan for his generous support of the University and his commitment to sports and student development. He noted that Dr Chan's contributions have helped advance the University's strategic priorities and enrich students' learning experiences. The Michael Chan Table Tennis Room stands as a lasting testament to Dr Chan's generosity and support for CityUHK. The University looks forward to continuing its partnership with Dr Chan and his family in advancing student development and excellence.

Dr Michael Chan expressed his delight at the opening of the new international-standard table tennis room with family, friends and members of the CityUHK community. Highlighting the role of sports in fostering perseverance, self-discipline and teamwork, he hoped the facility would help students develop their potential and pursue excellence both on and off the playing field.

As a token of appreciation, a commemorative video prepared by Ms Kathy Chan and her team was presented to Dr Chan , highlighting the Chan family's long-standing generosity and unwavering support for CityUHK, expressing thankfulness to the contributions of the late Dr Chan Sui-kau, Ms Shirley Chan and Dr Michael Chan over the years. On behalf of the University, Professor Alex Wong also presented Dr Chan with a souvenir specially prepared by the CityUHK Table Tennis Team.

Following the ceremony, guests joined a tour of the newly opened Sports Centre and were impressed by its excellent facilities which provide students with an outstanding environment for sports and recreation.
