From Youth Development to Academic Support: Mr Lau Ming-wai’s Strong Ties with CityUHK
One notable similarity between Mr Lau Ming-wai, Chairman of Chinese Estates Holdings Limited, and CityUHK is that both made their mark early on. “Despite its youth, CityUHK has steadily risen in the global university rankings because it has a forward-looking vision and can seize opportunities,” said Mr Lau.
With his passion for promoting positive values and supporting education, in 2010, Mr Lau organised the Hong Kong Spirit Ambassadors programme, and CityUHK was one of the most supportive organisations. Since then, Mr Lau has developed close affiliation with CityUHK. He has served on the CityUHK Council, was awarded the title of Honorary Fellow, and more recently, served as Co-Chairman of the Steering Committee of the “United, We Soar” Campaign, supporting the long-term development of CityUHK.
Mr Lau is deeply interested in CityUHK’s academic development and has made generous donations supporting the strategic initiatives of the University, including the establishment of the veterinary college. He served as Chairman of CityUHK’s Veterinary Medical Centre Board and rendered enormous support to veterinary education and research. “Society’s progress is inseparable from public health, and One Health is a multifaceted issue that requires a comprehensive approach,” said Mr Lau.
In recent years, Mr Lau has also advocated for Hong Kong youth. He previously served as Vice-Chairman of the Youth Development Commission, which co-ordinates long-term youth development work. He holds CityUHK students in high regard. “CityUHK students are hardworking, ambitious, and strong in social and communication skills,” he remarked.
Since 2011, Mr Lau and his family foundation, the Joseph Lau Luen Hung Charitable Trust, has supported CityUHK by establishing the education fund. The fund has provided scholarships for exchange programmes, non-local internship awards and financial aid, benefiting over 2,200 students to date.
When asked about the purpose of establishing the education fund, he said, “I hope this support will help CityUHK students venture beyond Hong Kong, broaden their horizons, and create more development opportunities. When they return, they will bring new ideas and energy to society.”
In recognition of Mr Lau and his family’s contributions to the University, in 2016, CityUHK named Academic 3 the “Lau Ming Wai Academic Building”. This also reflects his deep connection with CityUHK.
“I am delighted to work with CityUHK to help young people realise their potential, promote social development, and build a better future,” said Mr Lau. He hopes that in the long run, CityUHK students will stand out on the international stage. “This is not just support for education but a commitment to society.”
