Healthcare is one of the fastest-developing fields. Air and chemical pollution in modern city, fast spreading of infectious diseases, cancer, aging-related obesity, diabetes, and Alzheimer disease, all impose enormous pressure threating our health and quality of life. However, because of many challenges ahead in this dynamic field, it requires a discipline which can integrate the knowledge of engineering and life sciences at the intersection for medical solutions and innovations.

Hong Kong government clearly identifies medical and testing/certification services being among the six industries which Hong Kong has clear advantages for further development. Considerable amount of job opportunities will be created locally and globally. Aligned with this, Biomedical Engineering will serve to educate the future professionals, ultimately positioning Hong Kong to become a major centre in the following areas:

  • New biomedical devices for diseases diagnosis, monitoring, surveillance, and therapeutic treatment
  • Food safety and bio-security
  • New drug discovery
Our Target

This major aims to pursue excellence in education, research and innovation through the fusion of engineering with life sciences for the advancement of human health. The objectives of the major are to provide integrative educational opportunities that allow students to learn passionately, think critically and independently and innovate creatively so that they are:

  1. able to apply their skills to a variety of challenges in their chosen field;
  2. equipped with the spirit of innovation, creativity, adaptability and critical thinking to solve problems in biomedical engineering-related professions;
  3. able to function effectively in multidisciplinary team environments and communicate with a variety of audiences;
  4. able to demonstrate competency in their chosen fields, and make decisions that are socially and ethically responsible; and
  5. able to build and expand upon their undergraduate foundations by engaging in learning opportunities throughout their careers.
Start Your Career Here

As a graduate, you will find career opportunities in the medical device industry, engineering services in hospitals, consultation for public health, regulation and management in government departments and laboratories, and research and development in the commercial and educational sectors. Alternatively, you might choose to pursue postgraduate studies locally or overseas. This major will provide you with the expertise required to meet the needs of increasing public concern and demands on medical diagnostics and therapeutic treatments, biomedical instruments, food safety and quality, advancement in pharmaceutical and health maintenance products, as well as an awareness of human health and wellness.

Did You Know?

The world is currently suffering from the effects of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Biomedical engineering is a major player in the fight against COVID-19, including the development of biomaterials for vaccines, devices for rapid tests, and image technology for diagnosis and treatment.

Over 400 million people in China, 31% of the population, will be over 60 years old by 2050 (www.chinadaily.com.cn). In addition, air and chemical pollution, threats to bio-security, obesity and the rapid spread of infectious diseases will continue to impose enormous pressures on the provision of trained professionals in the field of biomedical engineering.

The Hong Kong government has clearly identified medical and testing/certification services as among the six industries with clear advantages for further development. The Biomedical Engineering major will educate future professionals in these industries.

本課程旨在為香港及大中華地區培育生物醫學工程專業人才,畢業生將具備跨學科專業技術及國際視野,以應付人口老化及疾病對人類健康帶來的挑戰。

Why Architecture and Civil Engineering?

The Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering (ACE) at the City University of Hong Kong is unique in Hong Kong, as we offer a broad spectrum of construction-related programmes, from architecture to civil engineering, building services engineering (or architectural engineering) and surveying, within a single department. With this advantage, students are not only able to acquire professional knowledge of their chosen discipline of study (e.g. architecture), but they can also interact with students or other programmes (e.g. civil engineering) to broaden their horizon. The interdisciplinary knowledge and team working ability have made our graduates very sought after in the construction industry.

About Programme
Why BAS New Media?

The BAS major is an interdisciplinary programme in new media arts. It balances theoretical inquiry with hands-on art-making, and encourages the integration of technological and scientific concepts in creative practice. The programme prepares students for careers in new media arts, media design, art-tech, and creative industries. This major is designed for students who want to explore the intersection of art, science, and technology, and to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in these rapidly evolving fields.

Our Target

Media creators are increasingly using scientific concepts in their work. Multimedia artists and creative technologists are also learning to collaborate with scientists when producing their work. This major develops lateral thinking and cross-professional understanding, equipping graduates for success in an increasingly interdependent and integrated world.

Students use technology as an artistic medium to generate learning and original research in a progressive and interdisciplinary context that bridges art, science, technology and the humanities. The curriculum encourages creative and critical thinking in the domain of digital content, and the successful expression of a socially engaged personal vision through digital media. Graduates receive professional training in state-of-the-art facilities, preparing them for future careers that combine art, science and technology in the creative industries, innovative education, and cultural management.

This major is especially suited to students who are not afraid to break down the barriers between the arts and the sciences.

The core courses are Creative Media Studio II (cinematography and video post-production), Physical Computing and Tangible Media, Critical Theory and Socially Engaged Practices and Narrative Strategies and Aesthetics of Time-based Media for a variety of media contexts such as moving image, animation, experimental videography, documentary works, games, hypertextual environments and non-linear screen storytelling.

Beyond the School and major core requirements, students are free to take any elective courses from various areas such as animation, game, cinema and new media. These electives are meant to assist students in designing their own study paths based on their personal and professional objectives.

All students undertake a research-based Graduation Thesis/Project, which can be a creative art or critical writing project. Optional internships and overseas exchange programmes are also in place to provide students with networking experience before they graduate. Throughout their studies, students will have broad exposure to world-class artists and creative media professionals who visit SCM as guests or artists-in-residence on a regular basis.

Students can also take free electives or minor(s) according to their personal or career interests to fulfil the credit requirement for graduation. A strong Student Advising Scheme is in place to provide students with essential guidance and mentoring as part of their study plan.

BACM graduates should be prepared for careers in artistic and cultural fields through good networking and the ability to contribute sound knowledge of multimedia and interdisciplinary creative thinking. The design of the curriculum also allows students to develop secondary areas of interest to broaden their employability and graduate-level higher education opportunities.
