Over the past three years, the research team led by Dr Lu Yang, Associate Professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering (MNE) at CityU worked tirelessly with another team from Tsinghua University to develop the world’s very first quantitative in-situ tensile testing technique for free-standing 2D materials. The related research about nanomechanics of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) has been published by Cell Reports Physical Science.(Read more)

Led by Professor Li Wen Jung of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Associate Provost (Institutional Initiatives - recently updated to Resources Planning), with collaborators from the Shenyang Institute of Automation (SIA) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and First Hospital of China Medical University (FHCMU), the research has recently been published in Science Advances.
The focus of the research aims "to reduce the number of deaths due to gastric cancer, one of the leading causes of cancer deaths worldwide,” said Professor Li, a co-contact author on the publication titled “Detection and isolation of free cancer cells from ascites and peritoneal lavages using optically induced electrokinetics (OEK)”. In collaboration with PolyU, Dr. LU Yang and his PhD student FENG Xiaobin (co-first author) published their new research about using surface restructured FeCoCrNi high-entropy alloy (HEA) as catalyst for high-performance water electrolysis in journal "Nature Communications". (Read more)
To enhance the learning experience of CityU students, Dr. Luk B L in collaboration with three CIO colleagues including Dr. Crusher Wong, Ms. Angel Lu and Ms. Kayla Lam, has developed a set of tailor-made Flipped Learning materials on Wind Energy for GE Course 2301 - Science and Technology: From Past to Future. Students of GE2301 were required to take a virtual reality (VR) field trip to LAMMA WINDS, the first commercial-scale wind turbine in Tai Ling built by HK Electric, to better understand how electricity can be produced from wind energy. This flipped classroom activity facilitated the understanding of the complex mechanism of the wind turbine drive train for electricity generation.

We are pleased to receive the notice from Research Grants Council (RGC) for the offer of the RGC Postdoctoral Fellowship Award to Dr. Shiwei ZHANG. This fellowship provides a stipend for a three years full-time appointment and also allowances for conference and research-related activities. Dr. ZHANG and his Project Investigator, Prof. Chin PAN, will work on developing rationally engineered surfaces with hybrid micromeshes to achieve unprecedented boiling capacity. This project may enable more efficient phase-change heat transfer for various energy systems and thermal management of high-power electronics. Congratulations to Dr. ZHANG and Prof. PAN. (Read more)

We are pleased to share that Dr. Yang LU's work on graphene mechanics was recently published in Nature Communications.
Congratulations to Prof. Zuankai WANG’s research group. The team has recently developed a novel droplet-based energy generator (DEG) with transistor-like architecture that fundamentally overcomes the physical limitation inherent in the traditional approaches and enables the lighting up 100 LED bulbs from a single droplet falling from a height of 15 cm. The design is genetic, which can be found applications for harvesting energy in both small scale and large scale.

In collaboration with the research team of McGill University, Dr. Yang LU of MNE and Prof. ZHANG Hua from the Department of Chemistry have published a paper titled “Thermal effect and Rayleigh instability of ultrathin 4H hexagonal gold nanoribbons” in Matter, a Cell sister journal.
MNE PhD graduate Dr. Shaoran YANG and BEng Mechanical Engineering student Xuezhi NIU won the Second Prize in the National Final of the 16th “Challenge Cup” National College Students’ Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Contest for their project “Flexible Bracelet Battery” under the supervision of Dr. Kaili ZHANG.
This biennial national competition for university students in China is organized by the Communist Youth League of China, the China Association for Science and Technology, the Ministry of Education, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the All-China Students' Federation, with an aim to promote the growth of young talents in innovation.
Dr. Yang LU was awarded the 2019 NSFC Excellent Young Scientists Fund (Hong Kong and Macau) for his project "微納米力學 Micro/Nano-Mechanics". He will receive a funding of RMB1.3 million to conduct nanomechanics study on low-dimensional crystalline materials and probing their flexible device and strain engineering applications for a maximum period of three years.
The fund, under the National Natural Science Foundation of China, was open for applications exclusively from Hong Kong and Macau for the first time. It aims to support top young scientists with outstanding achievements in basic research to carry out innovative research in fields of their choice, and nurture talent at the global forefront of technology.
Congratulations to a team of MNE 2019 graduates, Mr. Cheuk Lung HO, Mr. Chun Wing MAK, Mr. Ka Chun SHE, Mr. Kai Tat TANG and Mr. Tze Ching LUK, for winning the Merit Prize of the HKEIA Innovation & Technology Project Competition Award (2019) for their project “Manipulator with Computer Vision” under the supervision of Prof. Youfu LI.
Organized by The Hong Kong Electronic Industries Association Limited (HKEIA), the Award is an annual competition for students of electronic engineering or related engineering fields, with an aim to recognize and reward students with outstanding projects which demonstrate excellence in technology and innovation.
Prof. Zuankai WANG and his PhD graduate, Dr. Jing LI, has received the Hiwin Dissertation Silver Award from the Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society. The award carries a cash prize of RMB 0.3 million.
A team of MNE graduates and student including PhD graduate Dr. Shaoran YANG, MScME graduate Ying TSANG and BEng Mechanical Engineering student Xuezhi NIU won the Silver Prize in recent the 8th "Winning in Guangzhou" and Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Entrepreneurship Competition for College Students. The awarded project “SinEnergy Flexible Bracelet Battery” was selected among 15,700 entries submitted by 140 higher education institutes. The MNE team ranked 4/56 in the final round and was the only winner from Hong Kong.
The Project Supervisor Dr. Kaili ZHANG also received the prize of The Best Supervisor in the same event.
Congratulations to Dr. Yang LU on receiving the Outstanding Research Awards for Junior Faculty in recognition of his exceptionally outstanding research achievements. The Award will be formally presented to the winners at the University Congregation in November 2019.
Prof. Zuankai WANG has been selected as Fellow of The International Society of Bionic Engineering (ISBE) for his distinct contributions to the area of nature-inspired engineering. Founded in 2010, the ISBE is an educational, non-profit, non-political organization which fosters the exchange of information on bionic engineering research, development and application. To date, only 10 members of the ISBE have received the fellowship recognition.
Collaborating with the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China and Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research, Prof. Zuankai WANG has published a paper titled “Surface charge printing for programmed droplet transport” in Nature Materials. This work reports a new paradigm for droplet transport that has the potential for many applications ranging from water harvesting to bio-analysis. This work was also highlighted by Nature.
Congratulations to Dr. Patrick WONG on receiving the 自然科學獎二等獎 2018 from the Ministry of Education for his project “On the abnormal EHL film and its mechanism of viscosity wedge”. The award ceremony will be held on 19 June at Hong Kong Baptist University.

Prof. Jian LU received Joint Laboratory of Nanomaterials and Nanomechanics as one of the “outstanding joint laboratories” in an evaluation of the laboratories jointly established by Chinese Academy of Science and academic institutions in Hong Kong in 2018.
The joint team of Prof. Zuankai WANG and Dr. Yajing SHEN (BME) has developed a novel tiny, soft robot with caterpillar-like legs capable of carrying heavy loads and adaptable to adverse environments.
