New CityU scholarships will familiarise local secondary students with veterinary medicine at Cornell University

 

Students from local secondary schools will have the opportunity to familiarise themselves with veterinary medicine at Cornell University under new scholarships offered by City University of Hong Kong (CityU).

 

The new scholarships, funded by private donations earmarked for CityU’s School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM), will allow 30 top secondary students to participate in a summer school at Cornell University’s Summer College, Ithaca, US. 

 

Students on the CityU scholarships will attend one of the following two veterinary- or animal-oriented courses alongside American and international students from 24 June to 17 July 2016:

·         Veterinary Medicine: Science and Practice

·         Sustainable Animal Husbandry

 

Professor Michael Reichel, Dean of CityU’s School of Veterinary Medicine, said that, according to surveys, many secondary school students were interested in studying veterinary medicine in Hong Kong, but that they were not familiar with the training, teaching methods and curriculum of veterinary programmes.

 

“The scholarships will provide a valuable familiarisation experience for our young people to learn more about veterinary medicine, and attend an internationally acclaimed centre for veterinary medicine in the US,” he said. 

 

Secondary 5 students who have a keen interest in animals, are considering veterinary medicine as a profession and are nominated by their principals are eligible for applying for the scholarships, which is open now until 7th April 2016. They need to perform well in English, chemistry, mathematics and biology. The scholarships will cover most of the expenses of the programme, including airfares, summer school tuition fees, accommodation and meals.

 

CityU set up the SVM in 2014 in collaboration with Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, one of the top veterinary medical schools in the world. The strategic partnership is enabling the two institutions to jointly design and develop a first-rate Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and Science (BVMSc) programme, modelled on the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine programme at Cornell University.
