Event: Presentation of William Benter Prize in Applied Mathematics 2018

Date:   4 June 2018 (Monday)
Time:   9:00am
Venue: Peter Ho Lecture Theatre (LT-10), 4/F, Yeung Kin Man Academic Building, CityU

A female mathematician has become the first winner of the William Benter Prize in Applied Mathematics awarded by City University of Hong Kong (CityU). The internationally acclaimed scholar is an expert in wavelet theory, a pioneer in mathematical applications for the detection of art forgery, and a prominent supporter of encouraging greater interest in maths in developing countries and among women.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation in the US has used the techniques developed by the winner for managing its huge amount of data pertaining to fingerprints. Another application involves identifying forgeries of the work by artists such as Vincent van Gogh.

This year’s winner will deliver a talk following the prize presentation ceremony. The media is welcome to cover the event and interview the winner afterwards.
