In the latest “2026 Research Leaders: Leading Institutions” rankings released by the Nature Index, CityUHK was ranked 67th globally, 2nd in Hong Kong and 41st in Asia. Notably, its global institutional ranking among academic institutions stands at 62nd, underscoring its prolific research output, strong research capabilities and far-reaching impact in the international academic community.

A high-level delegation from CityUHK, led by Professor the Honourable Michael Ngai, Council Chairman of CityUHK, recently visited Kazakhstan. In addition to advancing strategic partnerships in education and research and signing memoranda of understanding, the delegation experienced first-hand how tradition and modernity are woven into the fabric of urban life in Kazakhstan.

A high-level university delegation led by Professor the Honourable Michael Ngai, Council Chairman of CityUHK, continued its visit to Uzbekistan following a fruitful mission in Kazakhstan. The delegation met with Mr Salomov Uktam Rahimovich, Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation of the Republic of Uzbekistan, and signed an MoU with Tashkent State Technical University.

The high-level university delegation led by Professor the Honourable Michael Ngai, Council Chairman of CityUHK, continued its visit to Kazakhstan, with important meetings with Ms Kobenova Gulzat Izbasarovna, Vice-Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and Mr Bakhtiyar Mukhametkaliyev, Vice-Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Development of Kazakhstan.

Professor the Honourable Michael Ngai, Council Chairman of CityUHK, led a high-level university delegation to commence a visit to Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan on 1 June. On the first day of the visit, the CityUHK delegation officially signed an MoU with the JSC ‘Center for International Programs’ (CIP) under the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The JC STEM Lab of Circular Bio-economy at CityUHK has recently achieved a breakthrough in the field of sustainable development technologies. A research team led by Professor Lee Duu-Jong, Director of the Lab and Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, has successfully developed a bio-inspired "all-weather building skin" that cools in sunlight and harvests energy from rain, alongside a "turbocharged" solar hydrogen system powered by low-cost copper ions.

In the latest “Nature Index 2026 Chemistry Supplement”, CityUHK delivered an outstanding performance, emerging among the “Leading 200 Institutions”. It was ranked 38th globally and first in Hong Kong, highlighting the University’s international influence and exceptional research strengths in chemistry and interdisciplinary research.

Students from CityUHK recently achieved outstanding results at the AI hackathon, HackTheEast 2026. Their innovative project, StudyRot, stood out among numerous competing teams and earned the OAX Foundation Award, demonstrating CityUHK students’ creativity and technical prowess in applying AI to real-life scenarios.
