Around 150 students from the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) at City University of Hong Kong learned about ways to succeed in the workplace from Ms Winnie Chiu Wai-yin, Hong Kong’s first female Deputy Commissioner of Police, during a seminar on 27 February.

The seminar, the first in the Servant Leadership Seminar 2018 organised by CLASS, aims to enhance students’ employability and leadership potential.

Professor Zang Xiaowei, Dean of CLASS, kicked off the seminar by presenting a souvenir to Ms Chiu who shared her experience about working in the Hong Kong Police Force over the years, discussing the challenges she has encountered and how she dealt with them. Professor Dennis Wong Sing-wing, Associate Dean of CLASS, and two students hosted the event.

In order to attain career success, Ms Chiu advised students to develop a strong sense of responsibility so as to win the confidence of their supervisors, and build strong interpersonal relationships with colleagues as a means of creating a more pleasant work environment. She also encouraged students to face setbacks with a positive attitude and regard them as an opportunity to learn.

At the end of the seminar, students enthusiastically asked Ms Chiu about leadership in general.
