CityU graduates have achieved encouraging job-seeking performance in 2002. An employment survey conducted by the University's
Student Development Services (SDS) shows that, by the end of December last year, as many as 93.5% of its 2002 bachelor's degree programmes graduates, and 94% of its graduates from higher diploma and associate degree programmes have found jobs, started their own business or pursued further studies. Among the graduates employed full-time, 54.5% received two or more job offers. The average monthly salary earned by bachelor degree and higher diploma/associate degree graduates recorded are HK$9,652 and HK$8,711, respectively. The survey has its findings based on 4,246 valid responses — a high 95.5% response rate.
SDS Acting Director Mr Joseph Chan attributed the satisfactory job-seeking scenario to relevance of curriculum design to students' career goals. "They were able to apply their
knowledge to their jobs. It is gratifying to learn that graduates from the building surveying programme enjoyed full employment, despite continuous slowdown in the building and construction industry."
The results in the SDS survey echo with those in a survey of employers conducted by the Education and Manpower Bureau of the Hong Kong Government in 2002. Based on findings received from 2,000 employers in Hong Kong, the survey shows that, among the eight UGC-funded institutions, CityU graduates ranked first in "Information Technology Literacy" and second in "Work Attitude". Their rankings in "Chinese and English Language Proficiencies", "Analytical and Problem-solving Abilities" and "Management Skills" have also improved over the 2001 survey.
