Event from 24th April to 10th May 2018


The College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) hosted University of Sydney PhD student Luisa Olmo for two weeks and assisted in serological analysis of over 1000 cattle and buffalo sera samples from Laos and Cambodia at CityU’s Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory.


The article ‘Risk factors for racehorse fatalities identified in British study’ about a study by Dr Sarah Rosanowski et al. appeared on Horsetalk.co.nz.


The College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences and its Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (BVM) programme featured in several Hong Kong newspapers recently.


Prof. Reichel (Chair Professor of Veterinary Medicine) and Dr Hill (Director of the CityU Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory), together with an Australian colleague, reviewed the history and current situation of bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV) in Australia and New Zealand.


Prof. Dirk Pfeiffer (Chair Professor of One Health, CityU), led a team of researchers from the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) London, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the National Institute for Animal Sciences and Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam, in a study investigating avian influenza in free-grazing ducks in Vietnam.


The World Health Organization (WHO), World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) jointly held an expert workshop in Geneva, from 26 to 28 February 2018, to further advance the development of the Tripartite Zoonoses Guide (TZG) and discuss overarching issues and specific topics related to the TZG content.


The article ‘Blanket rule: Light cotton rugs are no match for good shade on a hot day, study finds’ by Dr Padalino (Assistant Professor in the Department of Infectious Diseases and Public Health) et al. has been published on Horsetalk.co.nz.


Prof. Reichel (Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences) and Prof. Hampson (Head of the Department of Infectious Diseases and Public Health) along with Prof. Pfeiffer and Dr. Rosanowski attended the ‘International Conference on the Equine Disease Free Zone’ held in Hong Kong from 10 to 13 December 2017.


Prof. Pfeiffer (Chair Professor of One Health) was a keynote speaker at the 2018 ‘Global Alliance for Research on Avian Diseases’ conference in Hanoi, Vietnam, held from January 17 to 19, 2018
