Programme Aims

This programme aims to train and produce graduates with an understanding of advanced developments and highly marketable specialist skills in the discipline of veterinary medicine, and to meet local and regional requirements in the industrial, commercial, government or education sectors.

Programme Intended Learning Outcomes (PILOs)

Upon successful completion of this Programme, students should be able to:

1. develop intellectual competence necessary to successful academic and professional work;
2. contribute to the generation and development of knowledge in their respective fields through independent, original, and innovative research;
3. demonstrate specialist subject knowledge and a high level of transferrable skills with an emphasis on discovery-based element.

4. Qualifying Examination:

The Qualifying Examination (QE) is an additional requirement, independent and in addition to the existing Qualifying Report and Annual Progress Report assessment (which has a compulsory oral exam) for students commencing their PhD on or after 1 September 2019. PhD students must pass the QE with at most two trials within the 10–24 months (full-time) or 20–48 months (part-time) from the start of their study. 

5. Qualifying/Annual Report Submission:

i. Qualifying Report (Form SGS35)

Students are required to submit a qualifying report (in English) within the specified qualifying periods as follows:

• Full-time students: within 6-12 months from commencement of study
• Part-time students: within 9-18 months from commencement of study

ii. Annual Progress Report (Form SGS36)

Students who have been permitted to continue their studies after the qualifying period are required to submit a progress report (in English) on an annual basis until they have submitted the final version of their theses for assessment. The Qualifying Panel will provide its written assessment and feedback to the students on the Annual Progress Report (via Form SGS36).

6. Thesis:

A PhD thesis should present the results of research investigation, give evidence of a sound understanding of the area of study, its context and applicability, make a contribution to knowledge and make a substantial original contribution to knowledge in the subject areas concerned. The PhD candidate should submit a thesis for examination by the end of their maximum study period or the stipulated study period. The thesis assessment should include a compulsory oral examination and any other assessment arrangements as required by the Panel of Examiners.

7. Additional Notes:

Research students who commence studies on or after 1 June 2008 are required to take a one-credit unit compulsory course entitled Teaching students: First Steps (SG8001). Credit unit earned from this course will not be counted towards the University's minimum coursework requirement. Students are recommended to take this course in their first year of study.
