CityUHK response to orientation camp incident
City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) is committed to fostering a safe, harmonious and respectful learning environment. The University adopts a zero tolerance policy towards any form of improper conduct. All students are required to abide by the Code of Student Conduct, maintain good discipline and treat their peers with respect during orientation and campus activities. Student organisations hosting orientation camps must also comply with the relevant guidelines issued by the Student Development Services and complete designated training, including the Preventing Sexual Harassment on Campus workshop organised by the Equal Opportunities Commission.
The University expresses grave concern regarding the orientation camp organised by a Students’ Union affiliate, where serious mismanagement and inappropriate behaviour by certain individuals occurred. We are also deeply concerned about the unnecessary disturbance experienced by participating students. A Student Discipline Panel has been established without delay. Meetings with the organisers are being scheduled, and information is also being gathered from participants. Depending on the seriousness of the incident, disciplinary action will be taken in accordance with University procedures.
The purpose of orientation activities is to help new students understand university life and prepare for their academic studies and growth. Any conduct that deviates from this purpose, undermines student dignity or damages campus culture will not be tolerated. Students encountering difficulties during orientation activities are encouraged to seek assistance from the University.
CityUHK places the highest importance on the conduct of staff and students and will not tolerate any violation or behaviour that undermines the University’s reputation. We reaffirm that CityUHK will continue to rigorously safeguard campus safety and a culture of respect, ensuring that all members of our community can learn and grow in a healthy and upright environment.
