CityUHK researchers achieve recognition with 27 Awards at the 51st Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions

 

City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) proudly received 27 awards at the 51st International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva. The University’s researchers were honoured with one Special Prize, six Gold Medals with Jury Congratulations, eight Gold Medals, five Silver Medals, and seven Bronze Medals. This achievement underscores the exceptional quality of CityUHK’s research and further affirms its sustained international recognition across both academia and industry.

Professor Michael Yang Mengsu, Senior Vice-President (Innovation & Enterprise) and Yeung Kin Man Chair Professor of Biomedical Sciences, congratulated the award-winning faculty members, researchers, and innovation teams. He stated that their success on this prestigious international platform reflects the University’s commitment to advancing impactful, cutting-edge research. The University will continue to strengthen its research ecosystem, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and partnerships with industry to ensure its research creates tangible value. By bridging the gap between fundamental research and practical application, CityUHK aims to address global challenges and solidify Hong Kong’s position as an international innovation and technology hub.

The award-winning projects cover multiple cutting-edge fields. The project “Seawater Desalination Device”, led by Professor Freddy Boey, President and University Distinguished Professor of CityUHK, and Professor Goh Chin Foo, Associate Vice-President (Mainland Industry), received both a Special Prize and a Gold Medal.

The following projects also received Gold Medals with Jury Congratulations, acknowledging their exceptional ingenuity and application potential: “AI-EEG (Brainwave) Screening Platform for Depression Detection”, led by Professor Eddie Ma Chi-him from the Department of Neuroscience; “Electricity-free Smart Water Production and PV Cooling Device”, led by Professor Wu Wei from the School of Energy and Environment; “Electrolyte and Its Use in Lithium-based Battery”, led by Professor Xu Jijian from the Department of Chemistry; “Plasma Light Skin Cosmetic Instrument Suit”, led by Professor Paul Chu Kim-ho from the Department of Physics; “Pleno-health: Reconfigurable Artificial Intelligence Ecosystem”, led by Professor Wu Dapeng and Professor Wang Shiqi from the Department of Computer Science; and “UniquePOKE Series: The Multifunctional Biochip for Therapeutic Cell Engineering”, led by Professor Shi Peng from the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Professor Zhang Wenjun from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.

The University’s entrepreneurial community also celebrated success. Five start-ups and project teams developed under “HK Tech 300”, CityUHK’s flagship innovation and entrepreneurship programme, were among the winners, collectively securing two Gold Medals with Jury Congratulations, one Gold Medal, one Silver Medal, and one Bronze Medal. This success underscores the effectiveness of the University’s comprehensive support system in bridging academic discovery and commercial application.

The 51st International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva (IEIG), held from 11 to 15 March, served as a premier global stage for innovators. This year’s edition featured over 1,000 inventions from 35 countries and regions.
