CityUHK welcomes measures in the 2026-27 Budget

City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) welcomes the initiatives announced in the 2026-27 Budget to foster education, innovation and technology development, and talent cultivation. These measures will accelerate Hong Kong’s development into an international hub for higher education and further strengthen the promotion of the “Study in Hong Kong” brand.

The initiatives in the Budget focus on advancing Hong Kong’s development in higher education, innovation and life and health technology, as well as strengthening the research environment and international collaboration, and encouraging innovative research, such as the launch of 27 STEAM-related undergraduate programmes by the University Grants Committee (UGC)-funded universities since 2025. In the 2025-28 triennium, CityUHK has announced to launch three new programmes to address global challenges and the developmental needs of the country and Hong Kong: BSc in Cybersecurity, BSc in Environment and Sustainable Business and BEng in Innovation and Enterprise Engineering, promoting “digital economy” and sustainable development, and supporting Hong Kong’s development into an international I&T hub.

Being ranked among the top 100 universities in various world university rankings, CityUHK has established several new academic institutes and colleges, including the CityUHK Academy of Innovation, the Institute for Digital Medicine, the Hong Kong Institute of AI for Science (HKAI-Sci), the Institute of Future Learning and the College of Biomedicine, aiming to promote development, research and application through interdisciplinary collaboration, AI, and innovation and technology. In particular, the HKAI-Sci drives innovation and discovery, contributing to the development of artificial intelligence in Hong Kong.

Regarding the development of the Northern Metropolis University Town, CityUHK appreciated the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region’s (HKSAR) measures on accelerating relevant planning. CityUHK will actively align with the planning blueprint to facilitate the development of the University Town as an international innovation and technology centre and a world-class industry-university-research platform in the Greater Bay Area, while promoting the transformation of CityUHK research into practical applications, creating commercial and societal value.

CityUHK, recognised as the “Most International University in the World” for two consecutive years, has been supporting the Government of the HKSAR’s promotion of the “Study in Hong Kong” brand, with the aim of developing Hong Kong into an international hub for higher education and attracting top global talent. During the “Study in Hong Kong Week” from 23 February to 1 March launched by the Government, CityUHK is also co-hosting the 2026 Asia-Pacific Association for International Education (APAIE) Conference & Exhibition, joining local and international education representatives in discussing key issues in higher education, showcasing the University’s vibrant international campus environment, and creating more opportunities for students and staff.
