Nine CityUHK student athletes gear up to represent Hong Kong, China at the 2025 FISU Games

Nine elite student athletes from City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) will represent the Hong Kong, China delegation in Germany at the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games. They will compete alongside top university athletes from around the globe, showcasing the resilience and sporting excellence of CityUHK students. 

The nine athletes will participate in seven sports events – archery, badminton, fencing, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo and tennis – demonstrating CityUHK’s commitment to nurturing a wide range of sporting talent.

Leading the CityUHK athletes at the flag presentation ceremony for the Hong Kong, China delegation to the World University Games on 8 July were Professor Chan Chi-hou, Vice-President (Community Engagement) at CityUHK; Professor Alex Wong Chun-yuen, Dean of Students at CityUHK; and Mr Sunny Chau Yat-kwong, Associate Director of Student Development Services (Physical Education) at CityUHK and Council Chairman of the University Sports Federation of Hong Kong, China Limited. 

Professor Chan encouraged the athletes to seize this invaluable opportunity to excel on the international stage and to embody the spirit of both Hong Kong and CityUHK. Professor Wong expressed his pride in the athletes and hoped they would enjoy the experience and achieve outstanding results. 

Making his international debut as a CityUHK student, Nicholas Cheung Cheuk-kit, studying Electrical Engineering, will compete in the Men's 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke events. Last year, Nicholas broke the Hong Kong record in the men’s 50m breaststroke at the Hong Kong Games, emerging as a rising star in swimming. 

Nicholas said that he had never imagined that swimming would evolve from a simple parent-child activity with his father into his passion and profession. “I first started swimming simply because there was a pool near my home when I was young, and I often played in the water there with my dad,” he recalled. “I never thought I would come this far”. It was only after achieving outstanding results in various secondary school competitions that he gradually discovered his potential and pursued formal training. 

After enrolling at CityUHK last year, Nicholas quickly adapted to the new environment and established a routine that balanced both his studies and swim training. He noted that CityUHK has excellent sports facilities and a vibrant sporting atmosphere, providing comprehensive support for athletes. Additionally, he has developed strong bonds with his coaches and teammates on the CityUHK swim team, as they constantly motivate each other to excel. 

Looking ahead to the World University Games, Nicholas hopes to surpass his personal bests and connect with athletes from around the world through competition: “The most important thing,” he said, “is to enjoy the experience and give my all.” 

The World University Games will be held from 16 to 27 July in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany. CityUHK sincerely wishes all participating athletes every success as they give their all, push their limits, and find growth through their hard work and dedication.
