We would like to invite you to cover the following event:

Press Conference on “Young People’s Happiness Index 2019: A Comparative Study between Hong Kong and Singapore”
Date:       30 July 2019 (Tuesday)
Time:      11:00am
Venue:    Room G7619, 7/F, Yeung Kin Man Academic Building, City University of Hong Kong (near Lift 3)

The Department of Social and Behavioural Sciences (SS) at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) interviewed more than 1,000 young people in each of Hong Kong and Singapore between January and June for a ”Happiness Index” study. A total of 2,304 questionnaires were collected. The aim of the survey was to understand the attitude of young people in both cities towards happiness and their level of satisfaction about the quality of life in 11 areas, including “political and social”, “medical and healthcare”, “law and order”, “social welfare” and “educational” conditions.

The research team also conducted focus group interviews with 48 local young people in each city to understand what affected their level of happiness and how to improve their level of satisfaction with the quality of life in their city.

The results revealed that Singaporean young people had a higher overall score in the happiness index than their Hong Kong counterparts and higher levels of satisfaction with the quality of life in all 11 areas. The overall score of Hong Kong young people in the happiness index in 2019 was lower than in similar research conducted in 2015.

Although this research study was conducted before the outbreak of a series of protests against the amendment of the extradition bill, the findings provide insight into the current situation. In the press conference, Professor Dennis Wong Sing-wing, Professor of SS, and a group of undergraduate students will share their views on how to create a happy and peaceful city with mutual respect and cooperation in the context of the current dispute. Members of the press are welcome to attend the press conference and cover the study.
