Hong Kong people had the lowest score on a happiness index as well as for levels of satisfaction in all aspects of quality of life when compared to residents in Japan and South Korea, according to a survey conducted by the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) at City University of Hong Kong (CityU).
The survey on the Happiness Index for Hong Kong, Japan (Osaka) and South Korea (Seoul) was conducted by CityU’s CLASS in January. More than 1,100 citizens in each of the three cities were interviewed in order to understand their sense of happiness and their levels of satisfaction about quality of life in six areas: politics and society; economy; environment; public health; leisure and entertainment; and housing.
The survey revealed that Japanese people had the highest score in the happiness index, followed by Koreans and then Hongkongers. Compared with the previous year, the happiness index for Hong Kong people dropped slightly. In fact, their scores on the happiness index and the levels of satisfaction were the lowest among the three cities. The scores for satisfaction in politics and society, environment as well as housing even fell below the passing mark.
Professor Dennis Wong Sing-wing, Associate Dean of CLASS at CityU, will discuss the survey results at the press conference. Also, CityU students participating in the research project will share their views on the status of, and reasons for, the unhappiness of Hong Kong people from the perspective of young people.
