Anxiety and depression among secondary school students today are cause for alarm. Is there any correlation between these problems and personal psychological development and interpersonal relations? Also, can positive psychology and music help mitigate these issues?
The Department of Applied Social Sciences at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) and the Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs Association of Hong Kong have jointly launched the “Integrating Positive Psychology and Music Therapy Elements – Positive Ambassador Project”. Between September 2014 and December 2015, they interviewed more than 1,700 Form 2 and Form 3 students through questionnaires in order to understand respondents’ levels of anxiety and depression as well as their sense of happiness. The project studied factors such as crisis and protection that might affect students’ emotions and sense of happiness. Furthermore, it invited 119 youngsters from six secondary schools to participate in 10 sessions of “Positive Ambassador Groups”. The results were then compared with those taken from a control group.
Dr Sylvia Kwok Lai Yuk-ching, Principal Investigator of the Project and Associate Professor in CityU’s Department of Applied Social Sciences, will announce the survey results and project achievements at the press conference. She will also share some student cases and details of how the project was implemented.
