Event:                         “Contemporary Code – Artistic Research” Exhibition Opening Ceremony
Date:               29 October 2015 (Thursday)
Time:               6:00 pm
Venue:             3/F, Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre, CityU, 18 Tat Hong Road,

An exhibition focusing on artistic research will take place from 30 October to 29 November 2015 at the Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre (CMC) Gallery at City University of Hong Kong (CityU).

“Contemporary Code – Artistic Research”, which was created by the artists Gerald Bast, Alexander Damianisch and Romana Schuler, will feature 20 projects, which range from growth in architecture and radio jumpers to robotic technology and dancing authors to a film shown at the Viennale 2014.

Officiating guests at the opening ceremony included Professor Arthur Ellis, Provost of CityU, Dr Gerald Bast, President of the University of Applied Arts Vienna, Dr Claudia Reinprecht, Consul General of Austria in Hong Kong and Macao, and Professor Jeffrey Shaw, Chair Professor of CityU’s School of Creative Media (SCM).

The exhibition, which SCM organised in cooperation with the University of Applied Arts Vienna, reflects the ambitious research programme of the Viennese art university and illustrates its latest strategies.

These call for an opening of disciplinary borders and the creation of new spaces for and by the means of innovative processes.

“Research at the University of Applied Arts Vienna is open for all disciplines, scientific as well as artistic ones,” said Dr Bast.

“A modern university has to pursue the enormous public and social challenges with a welcoming attitude. We regard artistic research as a major key to mastering current challenges and looking into the future,” he added.

The exhibition highlights the overlap and difference between classic disciplines, the diverse working methods and the utilisation of public space as central traits of artistic research. It also contributes to the deciphering of codes and at the same time takes a look at the present and especially the future.

In addition, The Golden Calf (1994), an early work by Professor Shaw, will be screened at the event. It is about a virtual sculpture viewed in an empty plinth recently re-developed into a tablet computer version.

The exhibition, which is supported by the Austrian Consulate General Hong Kong, will open at CMC Gallery, 18 Tat Hong Avenue, Kowloon Tong, from 11:00am to 7:00pm, starting on 30 October until 29 November (Monday–Sunday). All are welcome and admission is free.
