The Centre for Innovative Applications of Internet and Multimedia Technologies (AIMtech Centre) of City University of Hong Kong (CityU) has developed the first virtual reality based learning programme which enhances the pre-learning abilities of severely intellectually disabled (SID) students by extending attention span and learning motivation in Hong Kong.

The unique pyscho-educational programme, which is called “The Interactive Sensory Programme for Affective Learning” (InSPAL), aims to strengthen the pre-learning abilities of the students and improve their quality of life. Positive results have been recorded in the students of the Cornwall School in terms of better attention, participation and engagement with the environment.

Professor Horace Ip Ho-shing, Vice-President (Student Affairs) and Director of the AIMtech Centre, will conduct a presentation of the InSPAL programme at the ceremony of the Cornwall School Open Day, in which Mr Duffy Wong Chun-nam, Chairman of the Quality Education Fund Steering Committee, Mrs Michelle Wong Yau Wai-ching, Deputy Secretary for Education (Professional Development & Special Education Branch), and Ms Amy Tso Lei-lei, Manager of the Cornwall School, will be the officiating guests together with Professor Ip.

A demonstration of InSPAL will be conducted after the presentation to show how it benefits the learning of SID students through interactive media, 3D motion capture, and virtual reality technologies with the principles of art therapy and relevant pedagogical techniques.
