We would like to invite you to cover the following event:
Event: Opening Ceremony of the Chinese Visual Communication Archives and Symposium on “Visual Communication: Catching Life, Inheriting Culture”
Date: 14 April 2014
Time: 2:00 pm – 4:30 pm
Venue: Multimedia Theatre, Level 1, Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre, City University of Hong Kong
The official launch of the Chinese Visual Communication Archives set up by the Department of Media and Communication (COM) at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) will serve as a valuable treasure trove for the teaching and learning of Chinese documentaries.
The video documentaries in the Archives, up to more than 20,000 minutes and spanning the centuries from the late Qing through the Republic of China to the present day, are from the personal collections of Dr Zhou Bing, a renowned documentary filmmaker in mainland China. Based on Dr Zhou’s generous donation, the Archives will provide primary sources for the teaching and research of visual communication and pave the way for CityU’s COM to prosper as a major hub for the studies of modern China’s politics, economy, culture and history.
Professor Way Kuo, CityU President, will give the welcoming remarks at the ceremony. The officiating guests will include Dr Zhou Bing, Professor Jan Servaes, Head of COM, and Professor Lee Chin-chuan, Chair Professor of COM and the supervisor of the Archives.
A symposium titled “Visual Communication: Catching Life, Inheriting Culture” will be held after the ceremony. Four influential documentary filmmakers from Greater China will be the speakers: Dr Zhou Bing, one of the most influential documentary filmmakers in mainland China, whose documentaries include The Palace Museum, The Art of Dun Huang and South of the Ocean; Mr Khan Lee, a renowned Taiwanese film director, whose films include Dream Flight, One Minute More and Ataabu; Dr He Zhou, Associate Head of COM at CityU, whose documentary works include Our Fathers’ Revolution and A Century to the Republic; and Mr Chang Jiahuang, a well-known painter and Head of the New Dunhuang Modern Grottoes Arts Centre. He is also the son of Chang Shuhong, the eminent scholar of Dunhuang studies, also known as “the protector of the Dunhuang caves”.
