We would like to invite you to cover the following event:

Event:     Press Conference for CityU’s novel membraneless photocatalytic
fuel cell
Date:      16 April 2013 (Tuesday)
Time:       1:30 pm
Venue:     Meeting Room B, 5/F, Biotech Centre 1, 9-11 Science Park West Avenue, Hong Kong Science & Technology Parks

Commonly-used batteries have only a short working life and contain poisonous heavy metals like arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury. If they are not properly treated for disposal, the poisonous materials may leak into the soil and cause environmental pollution.

Fuel cells are potential substitutes for batteries. With a longer working life and less heavy metal, fuel cells can use clean energy to generate electric power. When they run out of fuel, simply refilling them will resume their function. Better still, there are no carbon emissions throughout the process of production, power generation through to disposal.

Fuel cells are currently not widely used mainly because of their high cost. Dr Michael Leung Kwok-hi, Associate Dean of CityU’s School of Energy and Environment, and his research team have developed an innovative fuel cell that can significantly reduce the production cost by as much as 50%. The cell uses wastewater as a fuel to generate electric power and, simultaneously, purifies the wastewater. Dr Leung will meet the media to show the new membraneless photocatalytic fuel cell, and demonstrate and explain its features and principle of operation.
