We would like to invite you to cover the following event:

Event:     Press briefing on CityU receiving HK$20 million to develop a wireless data transceiver system with transmission rate 50 times faster than Wi-fi
Date:        5 November 2012 (Monday)
Time:       3:00 pm (Media please arrive at 2:30pm at 4/F reception, Cheng Yick-chi Building, CityU)
Venue:      State Key Laboratory of Millimeter Waves, Room P7822, 7/F,

A research team from City University of Hong Kong (CityU) has received sponsorship worth HK$20 million to develop a high-speed wireless data transceiver system with a 7GB per second data transmission rate, which is almost 50 times faster than a Wi-fi system.

The team is led by Professor Xue Quan, Deputy Director of the State Key Laboratory of Millimeter Waves at CityU and a member of the faculty of the Department of Electronic Engineering.

HK$18 million of the sponsorship is from the Innovation and Technology Fund under the Innovation and Technology Commission. It represents the largest-ever sponsorship that the University has received from the Fund.

In the movie MI4: Ghost Protocol,  US agent Ethan Hunt placed a USB thumb on top of a computer monitor, and within a second, all the data on the computer were downloaded and displayed on another computer. CityU will turn this movie plot into reality.

One of the many applications will be health-related. For instance, medical professionals visiting patients in a hospital installed with high-frequency wireless transmission system in the future will only need to tap on a tablet computer to bring up medical records and examination results. Even large-sized craniocerebral electronic scanning film and gastrointestinal endoscope video will be instantly accessible, helping the medical professionals to diagnose patients more precisely.

Professor Xue and his research team will introduce the research project at the press briefing.
