Novel technology is needed for the early detection of cancer. Current approaches are not sensitive enough to identify conclusively the few cancerous cells that might exist in one milliliter of blood containing millions of normal cells.

Professor Li Wen Jung from the Department of Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering at City University of Hong Kong has developed an optically-induced dielectrophoresis (ODEP)-based platform which helps doctors detect cancerous cells in blood samples early on, a process which can be 100 times faster than other leading-edge cell manipulation methods.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Croucher Foundation recently granted Professor Li HK$1 million to help advance his research. He will discuss the technology at the press briefing.
