Press briefing on CityU’s plasma-sprayed hip replacement implants
We would like to invite you to cover the following event:
Event: Press briefing on CityU’s plasma-sprayed hip replacement implants
Date: 8 May 2012 (Tuesday)
Time: 2:00 pm (Please arrive at 1:45am at the reception counter, 4/F Cheng Yick-chi Building, CityU)
Venue: Plasma Laboratory (Room 1200), 1/F Cheng Yick-chi Building, CityU
The human body can sometimes reject titanium alloys used in making artificial joints because bone tissue and the implant fail to combine. However, innovative plasma technologies created by Professor Paul K Chu, Chair Professor of the Department of Physics and Materials Science at City University of Hong Kong, encourage the patients’ bone cells to grow on the surface of the alloy, resulting in stronger and more durable implants, and a shorter recovery time for the patients.
Professor Chu will explain his research with reference to hip replacement implants at the press briefing. He will also talk about the Frist Class Shanghai Science and Technology Award 2011 that he received recently from the Shanghai Municipal Council in recognition of his contributions to the field of plasma science.
