Constructed mangrove wetlands are able to remove suspended solids, nitrogen and phosphorus pollutants in wastewater with up to over 90% removal rates, according to a study by Professor Nora Tam Fung-yee, Chair Professor of the Department of Biology and Chemistry. The technology developed can be applied in sewage treatment plants and reservoirs, and used to clean up algal blooms that may cause red tides.
The mangrove wetland sewage treatment system has been introduced in Shenzhen Longgang to deal with the domestic sewage for residents and enhance the environment. Professor Tam will introduce the research findings and explain the operation of the sewage system in Longgang.
