The School of Law at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) is organising a conference titled “Towards a Chinese Civil Code: Historical and Comparative Perspective” from 22 to 23 October. The conference’s purpose is twofold.

First, in the age of globalisation, comparative law receives wide attention in the world. Also, China is undertaking a titanic task to create its civil code. To this end, the Chinese legal community is in the process of learning about and borrowing legislative ideas from other experienced jurisdiction. We hope that this Conference can shed light on this issue from historical and comparative approaches.

Second, the Conference is dedicated to commemorating the 100th anniversary of the first Western-influenced and civil law-oriented Civil Code in China, Da Qing Min Lü Cao An of 1911.

Legal experts and academics from Europe, the US, UK, South Africa, mainland China and other countries in Asia will present papers at the Conference. They will discuss different issues from the perspectives of legal history, comparative law and private law.

The objective of the Conference is to further the understanding of the tradition and future development of the Chinese civil law from comparative and historical perspectives. The aim is to provide a platform for internationally prominent scholars to share their insights and expertise relating to civil law tradition in Chinese Private Law.
