City University of Hong Kong (CityU) has set up the prestigious William Benter Prize in Applied Mathematics, a biennial award that carries a cash prize of US$100,000, to recognise outstanding mathematical contributions that have had a direct and fundamental impact on scientific, business, finance and engineering applications. The first award will be presented at the opening ceremony of the International Conference in Applied Mathematics to be held on 7 June.

The winner, an internationally acclaimed mathematician, is renowned for his breadth of research bridging theories and applications in various fields including finance. He has recently looked into the financial “tsunami” and studied the effects of modeling volatility on derivatives. He will personally receive the prize from the award’s donor.
