The final of the Hong Kong Underwater Robot Challenge 2008, jointly organised by WWF and City University of Hong Kong (CityU), will be held on 6 April 2008 (Sunday). Finalists from 21 local secondary schools will compete in this unique event.

After several months of pre-competition and field trips to WWF’s Hoi Ha Wan Marine Life Centre in Sai Kung, the students have acquired the basics of robotic technology and marine conservation, knowledge they will utilise at the CityU pool during the exciting finale of this innovative contest.

The competition theme focuses on hydrothermal events found at mid-ocean ridges and the technologies used to study these deep-sea environments. The students have to use the underwater robots they designed to finish various tasks in the swimming pool.

The competition is the regional stage of the MATE International ROV (Remote Operated Vehicle) Contest. Winners of the challenge event at CityU will earn the right to attend the 2008 International Finals held in San Diego, United States.
